Adjusting to life after spica cast – the mermaid returns!

What a difference a week makes! It is been an emotional rollercoaster for Erin and I.  From the trauma of having the spica removed to sitting independently and swimming.  As each day this week has passed it has gotton a little easier.  Yesterday saw Erin sitting independently which pleased her no end!  On the phone she told  garbled to grandad how she was sitting to play animals!  I told her that today we were going swimming and she nearly burst!

Erin could swim long long before she could crawl let alone walk and has always loved the freedom the water gave her.  As the consultant had said that Erin can do whatever she chooses and she will go at her own pace I spoke to her aquatots swimming instructor who suggested I bring Erin along to her old class and we just saw how she did.

Arriving today at the hydro pool I was understandably I little wary.  Changing and dressing Erin is still awkward and painful for her, doing it in a communal changing room with Erin shouting oww mummy its sore, it hurts made me question whether I was rushing her.  However as we got into the water her face broke into an enormous grin – the type that reduced me to tears so it was a good job she was splashing about and no one could tell!

After just a minute I gave her the command and dunked her under.  She amazed both me and her teacher by then swimming underwater kicking her legs like it had only been yesterday that she was last in the  pool – not 19 weeks ago!

The lesson whizzed by and Erin did every single activity, including being thrown in her her teacher for the life saving task.  Although Erin is not yet weight bearing she attempted to push off from the side of the pool to do rockets and she happily sat on the edge and dived in towards me.

The enjoyment on her little face was pricless and going today was the best decision I have made all week.  What I continue to learn each day from Erin is that she will try anything!
